We allow money to disconnect us from everything. I often struggle to feel something when I create and it's because I've learned to create with monetary aspiration in mind. In fact, my studio sessions always end with a "can I sell this?"

People worry more about the cost of wedding than it's purpose, more about the status symbol of a home than it's ability to shelter and raise a family. I am guilty... Guilty of teaching myself not to feel... not to care... And now I feel homeless... I used to live less and love more and I miss it... There is a unique beauty that can only be brought to light when times are tough... It's as if the universe noticed that I forgot to feel and decided to send me a reminder and after all this time and effort I'm finally learning that music is an art that must "mean something" to it's creator. Listeners can interpret it however they like... but the source must be pure.... Funny thing... There was a time when I was 1/10th the artist, but my creative process was 10 times more true to the source. These days I don't even know the source. If someone asked me "what inspires you?" I honestly wouldn't know how to answer...

that's sad... especially when there are so many things in my life beaming with energy. The lover who gives her last dollar so that I can continue my journey. The Mother who offers a roof in my time of need. The Father who gifts a working vehicle so that I can get to and from studio sessions. The grandparent that leaves "I love you" on my voicemail knowing that I'll forget to call back. The friends who buy lunch, dinner and drinks. The fans that take a moment out of their day to send an email. The random acquaintance that leaves a genuine, helpful comment on a silly blog. I won't bore you with the entire list... you get the point... Now it's time for me to get the point.

I turn corners just to find another corner... and at the end of the day I can't help but feel like I've been lead in circles. Challenges never stop hitting me square in the face, in fact they only seem to get worse. I'd be a liar if I claimed to never question my journey, or whether or not I'm good enough to make it in this industry. Right now everything just seems too big... I'm out of money... I'm struggling to improve my craft at a rate that just might prove itself beyond my ability. I'm tired, scared and ashamed that no matter how hard I work to break down walls I can't so much as manage to open a simple door. Something has to give... Something has to change... There are days when I consider giving up. I literally weigh the possibility of making music for sport vs. survival and in the end the scale always sinks in favor continuing the struggle, but at some point I fear that things will change not because I want them to, but because they have to. How much longer can I continue to put loved ones at a disadvantage? How much longer can I depend on the good will of those who believe in me? How much longer can I fail at chasing success? There are plenty who would remind me that I've already been successful, but the fact of the matter is that success is up to me and as of now I am not satisfied. Making an honest attempt is an accomplishment, but it's not good enough for me. I refuse to lower my standards in order to accept mediocrity. Life doesn't work that way for me. No matter what happens, the album will come out... but there's a good possibility that it will be the last you hear from me. I hope it's not the case, but it just seems like the door isn't opening because it was shut a long time ago. Peace.

Just got done KICKin it with the other half of Moxie Black, iLLaj.... We poppped the Moe.. we knocked back the vodka... we celebrated for several reasons:

The album mixes are perfect.
Kid Couture's birthday was Tuesday.
iLLaj is leaving Portland for Miami.
The EP is out in March.
the LP is out in June.

So, I already posted this on the OTHER BLOG, but I decided I'd like to go into further detail with the dinosaurs... Basically, is sampling a fuck-head move or not?

Answer = sometimes

Let's be real, some of you dudes sample because you CAN'T play an instrument or compose a melody on your own. Let's be real, some of you dudes sample by LOOPING 4-8 bar segments of late 60's/early 70's records. I'm not anti sampling IF YOU'RE DOPE and UNIQUE, but if your shit just sounds like everybody else... well.... go kill yourself. Not really, but either go to the lab and practice or KILL YOUR CAREER. You're probably better suited as a manager anyways LOL.

All jokes aside, I don't really care how you make music so long as you are CONSTANTLY aspiring to create something beyond the confines of your skill level. That's my vision...

Mixes are sounding buttery right now... like fattening good yo... The project will be mastered next week, which means that the official release date will likely be late May/early June... That's a long time before y'all get to hear it... However, there will be a FREE EP leading up to the album dropping sometime in March!!! YES! Free!

Reviewed the first draft mixes for the album.... Things are sounding like bacon and breasts at the same time:

What I mean to say is that things are sounding very, very good... and to me bacon and breasts are very good things... so I figured that If I combined them it would explain how excited I am about the sonic value of Moxie Black's debut. anyways, today is cool. I'm still reeling from the energy of a track I composed last night with a friend. Dare I say I'm venturing into a new realm of creativity? Maybe.... Later today I've got a meeting with a well respected Portland Hip Hop producer. Gonna see what we can cook up... Project ahead, likely.

In Moxie Black news, the album is currently in the final mixing stages and will be sent off to be mastered by the end of January. We'll start rocking the PR and Radio Campaigns early February, which means that y'all won't hear the music until May... BUT... The EP will drop in March for FRRREEEEEEE!!! Yes, free.

Dag.... So I'm well aware of the fact that hardly anybody reads my blog anymore and that is 100% my fault for being the most whack-est poster ever... That being said, I'm kind of using this space as a personal journal so that I can recap my journey in this industry called music.

The last couple of weeks have been extremely hectic yet rewarding at the same time. Illaj and I recorded 21 songs in 5 days putting a cap on the Moxie Black album... That's right, me + illaj forever = Moxie Black. Strange, yeah... but the music is definitely left field from what the hip hop industry is used to....

Can I share something with y'all? I'm nervous as FUCK. Moxie Black is by far the biggest musical risk that I've ever taken. Beautiful Music was DOPE, but it was safe. It played on familiarity... This new music plays on the unfamiliar. It would be foolish of me to say that the project is without influence or that it's entirely original in its approach, however it will be extremely apparent to those of you who hear it that we decided to take a chance on something new. That is a scary position to be in for somebody who so desperately wants to make a life out of creating. High risk = high reward... but it can also mean HIGH loss and I'm terrified of being on the losing end. At the end of the day I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished and that's what makes me most nervous. I want people to love this album because I love it... I believe in it and I just can't see how it can fail... but what if I'm wrong???

You ever wonder what it would be like to have 6 fingers? I do... Think of all the extra activities that you could partake in. For example, if you used five fingers to spin pizza dough you would have one finger left over to scratch your body with. Everybody knows that spinning pizza dough makes you itch which is why six fingered humans make the best pizza. Case and point below:

The advantage of the sixth finger lays in it's uncanny ability to carefully mix and match the food groups. Take a look above and you will notice that freedom fries, chicken nuggets, pizza and cheeseburgers were all strategically combined on one pie pan. This is literally impossible for five fingered human beings. Speaking of music that I like right now, why is everybody sleeping on Fitz and The Tantrums?

This is easily one of my favorite EP releases of the year and I can only hope that it results in a full length. Great music through and through... If you've been sleeping on this you should be as embarrassed as you would be using this cell phone:

I know that you trendy types are probably saying, "no way dude, that phone is awwweesssooommee.." BULLSHIT! Halloween is fucking weird. I know that it's a "cool" thing to a lot of people, but take a minute to look at it from an outside perspective. What's cool about paying $100 to dress up like a slut, monster, mobster, celebrity or farm animal? As much as I'd like to boycott the dumb-fest all together, I have major plans to kick it with the homies, not to mention GF obligations (women seem to love Halloween)... So I'll be getting down no matter how little I'm looking forward to seeing a MILLION Michael Jackson costumes:

Quite possibly the worst television show that I have ever seen in my life. Why did I watch it? Well... After a long day in the studio I decided it would be nice to drink with some friends, so I invited one over.... Unfortunately this particular friend insisted on watching Cougar Shit, which inevitably resulted in me deciding to consume more red wine than I am comfortable with. Thing is... red wine usually makes everything funny to me, but I still didn't laugh once. Sad really... Ms. Cox = dead to me (sad face).

When you chase something it's easy to lose sight of what you have right in front of you. I am the dream. below is my response:

In my humble opinion... Hip Hop is advancing from a musical standpoint. The roots of the genre are so simplistic and replicable that modern day artists are in search of an avenue by which to propel the scene/culture forward. This means application of outside genre, melody and theory. The same trend took place in rock during the early-mid 70's when "art rock" bands like Pink Floyd attempted to extend the creative lengths of the art form. Keep in mind that rock is a genre who's origins are as simple as the four bar blues, so their movement was significant. We now have a flurry of rock genres, from alternative to indie, but the fact remains that it's still rock and roll. I think that hip hop is headed in the same direction.. Sub genre & massive cultural impact. Those who complain about the transformation and trend will be left behind because the past will not return and in all honesty, why should we want it to? Why not love forward movement?

I have absolutely no idea what it feels like to be famous, much less a person of popular interest. There is no formula that can determine the impact of celebrity on an individual. The recent events surrounding Mr. Kanye West have inspired a great deal of thought and confusion. Musically, I consider him one of the most influential musicians of the 00's. He has almost single handedly inspired progression in what was becoming a relatively stale genre. On the other hand, he seems to be a social wrecking ball. A deeply saddened individual, hell bent on gaining the approval of all those who cross his path. As much as I would like to view his shortcomings as a personality flaw, the fact of the matter is that his behavior is a result of something that he learned in his childhood. Somewhere along the line Mr. West felt inadequate, so much that it haunts him to this day even though he is one of the most successful entertainers alive.

I would be lying if I claimed to not have aspirations of reaching a celebrity-like level of success. That being said, I can't help but wonder what skeletons might creep out of my closet. We have all learned to behave a certain way as a result of pain...

Life is somewhat polarizing these days. On one end of the spectrum I am experiencing a lot of success in my professional life, on the other end I recently got the news that my mom is on the verge of paralyzation and will be undergoing emergency surgery this Thursday. There are a lot of details regarding her experiences that I won't share out of respect for her privacy, but let's just say the whole situation has taken a toll on my heart. She is so strong. Never complains, not once. To say the least I am proud to know that she is the cloth from which I am cut. She is the most important person in my life.

I'm in Colorado for a week visiting family. As much as I love being here, I'm going crazy waiting on some news from back home. There are some major stars in line for the Spread team and with one phone call we might have our own little galaxy ya ya ya diiiiiiggggg???

In other news, I'm currently working out the kinks for the Jay Child & Dekk EP. The release is to be 7 tracks long and will be a free download for 1 month. At this point it's just a matter of getting the business end straightened out and the mixes finalized. I've also been working hard on my collaborations with ILLAJ and Luck-One. I've come to realize that this whole process is impossible. The more that our visions begin to take shape the less they seem like dreams. It is impossible to find what does not exist. Music is quickly becoming my reality and as a result the fantasy is dissipating. Whether it's predetermined or self imposed, we all have a roll to play. For some it takes a lifetime behind curtains to memorize the script and get into character, for others it's just a matter of waiting for center stage to open up. I am the latter and my time is soon. Gone are the days of panic and unrest. I have fully accepted uncertainty and risk and have learned to combat them with patience and positivity. It is now clear to me that slow, careful , confident motion supersedes impulse and obsession. In order to create and inspire we must live with inspiration and creativity. The beauty in this is relativity. We can literally create our own purpose and change it as we see fit. In a right mind there is no such thing as failure and in a focused mind there is no such thing as success. Dedication is the middle point and where I choose to exist.

I've never been in a better place than where I'm at right now....

Say what you want, but Autotune doesn't write, produce or perform records. The software does not sing for you. The music industry is fast. In other words, things change.... What seems like a good move today might seem like too much of a risk tomorrow. When it comes to business the only guarantee is a great product and a great product takes an exceptional amount of work, both inside and outside of the studio. If you are an aspiring artist you cannot expect to be successful by simply recording songs or making beats. You MUST educate yourself about the business and you MUST do everything in your power to master your artistic craft. In order to do this you should expect to spend NO LESS THAN 40 HOURS PER WEEK on music and music related tasks. Network, study, rehearse, record, reference, write, create, research, perform.... Take a minute and reflect about how you've been spending your time... If you are completely satisfied then you are on the fast track for FAILURE. You can always do more, you can always do better and you can always work harder... NEVER ALLOW YOURSELF SATISFACTION. This is not to say that you shouldn't enjoy your success, but instead that you should ensure further success and enjoyment by constantly aiming higher. Very few understand this mentality and as a result very few are successful in this industry. Self motivation is KEY. Don't depend on a label or deal... Wake yourself up and put yourself to work. Minimize your distractions, whether it's weed, video games, women or friends. Every move you make should be a move that makes you a better artist and a better business person. I've never been the type to get a wandering eye just because the sun is out, but I sure as hell know people who do. We all go through stages of lust and desire, but at the end of the day what most people long for is something that they can hold on to. Everybody wants to give and receive love. EVERYBODY. Unfortunately we are taught to believe that "love" should wait until we're older and that our younger years should be reserved for "freedom". As a result, young people often times allow great relationships to slip away for the allure of "single life". Funny thing is, after a few months of "freedom" most people begin to feel lonely and empty. There is always somebody around to fuck, but never anybody around to listen, laugh or empathize. I've seen far too many friends go through the same thing and to be honest it can be frustrating. I've learned that "youth" should never be used as an excuse to make bad decisions because the fact of the matter is that young people have more time to live with the consequences than the elderly. If you truly love somebody or believe in something don't allow yourself to be persuaded by temptation that is no more than a group think. I understand that we must make mistakes in order to learn from them. However, if you look hard enough you will find that we can actually learn some things from observing the mistakes of others.

I was really hoping to be on some goofy blogging shit today, but for some reason this came out... LOL!

I've been driving too fast lately... So fast that I'm afraid I would kill a dinosaur if I ran into it. I don't want that. I want to gently knock that dinosaur out, tie it up and bring it home with me... ya dig? I'm trying to find the balance between focus, hard work, productivity and mental health. Life is too beautiful to spend nervous and worried... not even the sexiest dinosaur is worth living like a maniac. Next week I'm going to start seeing my old therapist again. He is dope as hell with his craft LOL! These past few weeks have really exposed how much pressure I put on myself and how I allow that pressure to manifest in areas of my life where it doesn't belong. I've got to learn how to challenge myself without it being destructive. I need to forgive some people in my past and most importantly I need to trust the people who I am currently surrounded by.

Sorry blog followers. I have slacker-ness in me. Well, no, not really. I've actually just been working so hard that finding time to get a post in is difficult. There is so much going on lately. My world is constantly spinning and I am constantly running in hopes that I'll end up on the top. A friend just put me on to this article. Apparently Kanye is releasing a book of philosophical ideas/thoughts. I'm all for deep thought and introspect, but I'm not neccesarily interested in hearing what Mr. Yeezy thinks of the world. If you are a musician, make music. Massage your ego with your art and try to avoid measuring your cock in outside arenas that require extreme proficiency. In the end you will only look foolish. Just my opinion. Example: Tupac Shakur's "The Rose that Grew From Concrete":

This book was not good. It was nothing but a bunch of emo scribblings from a teenager. Sorry folks... those who study and have made a life of studying the literary art of poetic expression do not consider Tupac a top 10, 50, or even 100 poet. Same will be true for Kanye's book of philosophy. LOL... Before you get mad please try to understand what I'm saying. Tupac was an amazing musician, but he was not a good poet at all, at least not in this book. Song lyrics and poetry are different. Stay in your lane is all I'm saying. Thing is... There are people in this world that will never make sense to me and I've come to accept that I probably don't make sense to them either. It amazes me that there can be such a gap in understanding over things that seem so simple, but I guess that's the nature of the business. There are days when I feel like everything that comes out of my mouth is Gibberish and no matter how hard I try I can't seem to find a way to say what I mean (but I do mean what I say).... That's why this Ryan Leslie track really hits me. Some people might think it's stupid, but stumbling to find the appropriate language for every situation is a very real experience. I can talk for days to almost anybody, but sometimes the conversations just don't translate. Everybody in this industry has a story or a contact, but rarely do their words mean anything... make sense? I recognize good intentions though and I am thankful for everybody who wants to help out, but at this point the most helpful thing that anybody can do for us is share our music with as many people as possible. If you were to listen to Kanye you would certainly imagine a life in the music industry to be a bonkersly-glorious experience... umm... Well.... It's fulfilling, exciting and inspiring... but it's also CHALLENGING, especially when you're trying to make a mole hill out of a canyon. These day's I'm starting to get worn thin... I mean literally... People keep asking me,

To those of you who care enough to ask, THANK YOU, and no I don't have AIDS...YES I am eating!!.... but I'm also spending a lot less time sitting and sleeping. In fact, even when I sleep I find myself waking up thinking about what I could be doing to get ahead. I've never been the obsessive/addictive type, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm heading in that direction... at least with music... I could sit here and gas you up like "music is easy for me" and "it's nothin, I'm taking over," but in all honesty it's fucking HARD WORK... I'm NOT complaining because I love it, but I'd be a liar if I didn't admit that sometimes I overwhelm myself... It's funny because I've never really been overwhelmed by anything... Some people HATE the constant transformation and evolution of Hip Hop culture.... I am NOT one of those people. In fact, I am truly inspired by the current artistic exploration evident in the craft of mainstream and underground artists. It seems like people are finally admitting that a synthesis of outside genre and influence is a thing of beauty, whereas before you either brought it all Hip Hop all the time or you went home.... I still have love for the aggressive spirit of "pure Hip Hop", but I must admit that the diversity of sound present in the current generation is refreshing. We are making up for the gimmicks of the late 90's and early 00's... Beyond the music, what grabs me most is the evolution of branding and image.... oh how things have changed:

I have been noticing Common's instability for a while, but now it's reached a point where it must be addressed. Not only is the above commercial entirely whack, but it's also a representation of Common's constant contradiction. The man has spent a good part of the last decade establishing himself as a conscious MC. In fact, he was often one of the few rappers who accepted the "conscious" title with open arms (unlike Nas, Kweli, etc.). Common has often made very strange decisions with his music and career and as of late he has somehow transformed into a "bitch" loving playboy. Before we get into that, let's observe the past. I'm not sure when the wierd decisions began, but I'm pretty sure it was somewhere around here:

Miz Badu seems to have a way of turning men crazy and for certain people (Andre 3000) it has ended up being a "good crazy".... but it really didn't work out for Common because it seemingly led him to this:

Now I've heard the argument that Electric Circus was before it's time... IT WASN'T... Let's be honest people, it was a mess... I give Comm credit though because he was able to rebound with "BE" and a somewhat interesting "Finding Forever"... but this last year he hit us with:

Universal Mind Control is not only a transformation for Common, but it is a complete contradiction of everything he once stood for. On Universal Mind Control there are continuous references to women as bitches and a seemingly constant undertone of misogyny. The produciton is new age and synth laced, which is fine for the new breed of MC (a la Kanye, Lupe) but Common just ends up sounding like an old man who is desperate to be current. In a recent collaboration with Kid Cudi and Kanye called Poker Face (on my play list below) Common literally says:

"a stripper from the south looking for a pay day,
said bitch you should do it for the love like ray j,
she said but you be on that conscious tip,
get your hair right and get up on this conscious dick"

WTF? Keep in mind that this is the same guy who released "The Light" and "Come Close"... I don't want to sound too critical... but I must admit that I have quickly become uninterested and uninspired by Common. He used to be one of my favorite MC's, now he just comes off as desperate... Kind of like when MC hammer tried to come back as a gangster rapper! lol! I know that there is most likely a story and an explanation... but even that scares me... can money, fame and Hollywood really change an individual that much? Or was the conscious Common always an act? Guess we'll never know....

SO, yesterday I was in my gmail doin business as usual and I got a G-talk request from a username that I definitely didn't recognize... I accepted the request and immediatley shot out a "who's this?"... Person responded by saying:

This person was not another artist looking for beats or collaboration... just a straight up fan of Beautiful Music... We ended up chatting for a good 10 minutes. It was a crazy feeling to have somebody support me that I've never met... Music is a business rooted in selling the work of people to people and at the end of the day what drives me is the interaction, not the bottom line... Lord knows I am!! Getting closer and closer to finding my dino though and Spread has only been in business for 5 months. At this point we are scrambling to put together a good team (lawyer & accountant) because there are some major things on the table for Beautiful Music. Beyond Beautiful Music, Spread has started working on a project with our first artist Jay Child. After just two days in the Studio we have the beginnings of HITS... Swear to god H-I-T-S!!! Ok I get it... Swag is fading like my "indie money" jeans (that means old and busted yo) but the fact remains that it will make a comeback in about 10 years. Swag will be that shit, again. I spend most nights on a couch in my mother's house... I'm almost 25 years old and barely make the cheap rent that she charges me... I don't have a car and I can't afford one, so as a kind gesture my pops is going to give me a small loan... I'm surrounded by debt... equipment, college loans, business expenses... This June I will most likely join the unemployed unless I somehow magically find a job in this failing economy... Part of me doesn't want to find a job... I want to focus on my dreams, my business, my craft... but I have to stand on my own two as much as I can...

Every single day is a humbling experience for me. Whether it's a ride home from work or a borrowed quarter to catch the bus, I am constantly relying on others to keep me afloat. Sometimes I like to think that all those who help me do so because they believe in my vision, but doesn't that sound selfish? It seems like every month something new comes up that puts those around me at a disadvantage. I can sense that the risks I'm taking are starting to take a toll on my loved ones and it breaks my heart.

To those who sacrifice so much, please know that I am doing everything I can to get on my feet. I can't promise when my day will come, but I am working tirelessly to make sure that it is soon.

No matter how hard things get, I love you my life.

Just watched the Wiz this weekend for the first time since I was probably 12... This shit is dark and adult and genius. Definitely a commentary on the disparity that exists in America. I never got that until now because I didn't even know what disparity meant the first time that I saw it. The music is fucking bonkers too. Whenever I see Michael (old or new) I can't help but crack jokes on him. I thought about it for a while and have come to the conclusion that I literally dehumanize the man. One way or another, I have allowed myself to internalize Michael Jackson as a thing. What's sad is that people have done that to him since he was a child. The world has only ever seen him as a "thing" that entertains us... not as a human... He has become a walking example of what emotional isolation can do to a person... and right about now it's got me fucked up... fucked up like Leonardo was when Raphael went into that coma...

Man... Leo was sick about that shit... I watched the turtle movie this weekend too... So good... If I don't make it as a producer I'm definitely considering a career in super mutant crime fighting... just depends on the economy I guess...
